The Popcorn Kernel Sling of Kernel Kaos

Tavern Armory

What Ye Need to Know

The weapon: Popcorn Kernel Sling of Kernel Kaos
Weapon type: +1 magic sling
Rarity: Rare
Attunement: Required
Best users: Rogues, rangers, fighters, and ranged support builds
Combat role: Limited area fire damage and temporary difficult terrain

This +1 sling transforms ordinary sling bullets into explosive kernels. It carries three kaos charges, regained at dawn. After a hit, spend one charge to make the kernel burst. Creatures within 5 feet of the target make a DC 15 Dexterity save, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failure or half on a success. The ground in that radius becomes difficult terrain until the start of yer next turn as hot, slippery popcorn scatters everywhere.

A Strange Addition to the Rack

One Kernel, One Very Loud Snack

The sling is woven from red-and-white cord, its leather cup is shaped like a tiny cooking pan, and every loaded bullet begins to smell faintly of butter.

On command, the projectile swells into one brilliant kernel and detonates into a cloud of hot popcorn large enough to turn a tight formation into a stumbling buffet.

The Popcorn Kernel Sling of Kernel Kaos is an original Mike's Tavern weapon for D&D 5e. The burst is useful but limited to three charges, a 5-foot radius, and a Dexterity save. The difficult terrain lasts for one round rather than coating the dungeon forever.

Formal D&D 5e Item Rules

Weapon (sling), rare (requires attunement)

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic sling. It requires ordinary sling bullets as ammunition.

Kernel Kaos. The sling has 3 charges and regains all expended charges daily at dawn. Once per turn, immediately after you hit a creature or object with a sling bullet, you can expend 1 charge to transform the bullet into an explosive kernel. The target and every other creature within 5 feet of it must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 2d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful save.

After the explosion, unattended ground within 5 feet of the target is covered in hot, slippery popcorn and becomes difficult terrain until the start of your next turn. The popcorn then vanishes. It cannot be collected, eaten, sold, or preserved.

Kernel Kaos does not trigger from a missed attack and cannot be applied more than once per turn.

A Tiny Burst With Real Placement

Why Kernel Kaos Works

The +1 sling functions normally without charges and uses cheap, ordinary ammunition. A ranged character never has to spend magic merely to contribute.

A 5-foot burst punishes tightly packed enemies but can also burn nearby allies. The short-lived difficult terrain may cost a creature movement without trapping it for an entire encounter.

Three charges and a save keep the 2d6 area damage from replacing dedicated spells. The wielder must hit first, so the burst cannot be placed freely on any point in space.

The right mindset is explained in the Tavern's guide to when doing less damage can win more fights. The weapon's trick matters only when it improves the party's position.

Best Wielders

Who Should Carry It

Rogues

A rogue can combine one accurate sling hit with Sneak Attack, then use the burst when several enemies crowd the same front line.

Rangers

Rangers understand firing lanes and can choose targets whose surrounding space catches enemies without roasting allies.

Fighters

Extra attacks improve the chance of landing a suitable hit, although only one charge can be spent per turn.

Build Around the Gimmick

Character-Building Guidance

Prioritize Dexterity for sling attacks, initiative, and defence. Constitution helps a ranged skirmisher survive when working close enough to exploit clustered targets.

The sling requires ammunition and a free hand to load it. Carry ordinary bullets, respect its normal range, and do not assume the magic creates endless ammunition.

Agree on targets and timing with the party before committing the signature effect. The Tavern's teamwork guide shows why clear calls and reliable follow-through matter more than keeping the joke to yerself.

Pop the Centre of the Formation

Kernel Kaos Tactics

Aim Between Enemies, Through One Enemy

The explosion centres on the creature or object ye hit. Select the target whose 5-foot neighbourhood contains the most foes and the fewest friends.

Block a Narrow Route

The temporary difficult terrain matters most in a doorway, stair, bridge, or gap an enemy must cross before yer next turn.

Save Charges for Clusters

Against one isolated target, the fire damage may not justify a charge. The sling earns its rarity when the burst affects several creatures or delays movement.

Whenever the choice becomes uncertain, return to position, timing, and target choice. A good gimmick still needs a good target.

Ammunition, Range, and Friendly Fire

Sling Considerations

Kernel Kaos requires a hit with a sling bullet. It cannot centre the explosion on an empty square after a miss.

Every creature in the radius saves, including the original target and allies. The wielder is not automatically protected.

The popcorn affects unattended ground. A flying creature can take burst damage but does not care about kernels on the floor unless it later enters that space.

Advice for the Game Master

How to Run It at the Table

Place the sling in a travelling showman’s strongbox, an abandoned theatre concession stand, or the kit of a halfling sapper with excellent snacks and terrible restraint.

Make each burst quick and tactile: a hard white flash, a buttery cloud, a staccato roar of popping kernels, then boots skidding across the floor.

The difficult terrain expires at the start of the wielder’s next turn. Overlapping bursts do not increase the movement cost or extend an older patch.

Set expectations for comic weapons during Session 0. The humour should create shared momentum without turning another player's serious moment into a compulsory punchline.

Common Mistakes

Five Ways to Burn the Batch

Exploding on a miss. Kernel Kaos requires a hit.

Ignoring allies. Every creature in the 5-foot radius makes the save.

Creating permanent terrain. The popcorn vanishes at the start of the wielder’s next turn.

Using several charges in one turn. The property activates once per turn.

Forgetting ammunition. The sling still needs ordinary sling bullets.

The Tavernkeeper's Verdict

Small Radius, Loud Results

This sling belongs to a ranged player who enjoys solving clusters, lanes, and chokepoints. Its burst is compact enough for tactical placement and dangerous enough that friendly positions matter.

Hit the middle kernel, warn the front line, and let the dungeon smell mysteriously of butter.
