The Dancing Flamingo Lance of Chaotic Pirouettes
Tavern Armory
What Ye Need to Know
The weapon: Dancing Flamingo Lance of Chaotic Pirouettes
Weapon type: +1 magic lance
Rarity: Rare
Attunement: Required
Best users: Cavaliers, paladins, mounted fighters, and mobile martials
Combat role: Charge control and brief defensive footwork
This bright pink +1 lance rewards a committed charge. Once per turn, after moving at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hitting it with the lance, the target makes a DC 15 Dexterity save. On a failure, its speed becomes 0 until the end of its next turn. Whether it succeeds or fails, the wielder gains +2 AC against the target’s attacks until the start of the wielder’s next turn.
A Strange Addition to the Rack
The Charge Ends in a One-Legged Pose
The shaft is lacquered pink, the guard is feather-shaped, and a hollow plastic flamingo sits proudly above the spear point. During a charge, its neck stretches forward while spectral dance steps flash beneath the wielder.
A solid hit sends the victim into one involuntary spin as the lancer finishes in a poised, deeply irritating pirouette.
The Dancing Flamingo Lance of Chaotic Pirouettes is an original Mike's Tavern weapon for D&D 5e. Its control requires distance, a hit, and a Dexterity save. The AC bonus protects only against the struck target, so the wielder cannot charge one goblin and become harder for the entire battlefield to hit.

Formal D&D 5e Item Rules
Weapon (lance), rare (requires attunement)
You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic lance.
Chaotic Pirouette. Once per turn, when you move at least 20 feet in a straight line toward a creature and then hit it with the lance on the same turn, the creature must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, its speed becomes 0 until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, its speed is unchanged. A creature immune to the prone condition automatically succeeds.
Fancy Footwork. After Chaotic Pirouette triggers, you gain a +2 bonus to AC against attack rolls made by that target until the start of your next turn. This bonus applies whether the target succeeds or fails on its saving throw and ends early if you become incapacitated.
The target is not knocked prone, restrained, or prevented from taking actions or reactions.
Momentum Turned Into Control
Why the Flamingo Dance Works
A +1 lance remains a powerful mounted reach weapon when there is no room to charge. The magic never removes the lance’s normal restrictions at close range.
Reducing speed to 0 can stop pursuit or escape, but the target keeps its action, bonus action, and reactions. It can still attack anyone already in reach.
The 20-foot straight-line approach makes the trigger visible and demands space. Once-per-turn wording prevents unusual movement and extra attacks from creating several pirouettes.
The right mindset is explained in the Tavern's guide to when doing less damage can win more fights. The weapon's trick matters only when it improves the party's position.
Best Wielders
Who Should Carry It
Mounted Fighters
A mount supplies speed and helps create repeated charge lanes, while the rider chooses when to risk moving through enemy space.
Paladins
A paladin can combine one decisive charge with strong single-hit pressure and use the narrow AC bonus to survive the marked enemy’s answer.
Mobile Martial Builds
Characters with reliable movement can trigger the feature without a mount, provided the battlefield offers a clear 20-foot line.
Build Around the Gimmick
Character-Building Guidance
Prioritize Strength for attacks and damage, then Constitution for surviving the exposed position at the end of a charge. Mounted characters should also invest in keeping their mount alive.
The lance is awkward against creatures within 5 feet and normally requires two hands when the wielder is not mounted. Carry a practical sidearm instead of assuming every room contains a parade route.
Agree on targets and timing with the party before committing the signature effect. The Tavern's teamwork guide shows why clear calls and reliable follow-through matter more than keeping the joke to yerself.
Charge With an Exit in Mind
Chaotic Pirouette Tactics
Freeze the Pursuer
Charge a creature that needs movement to reach a vulnerable ally. Even though it can still act, speed 0 may leave its best attacks out of range.
Mark the Enemy Most Likely to Retaliate
The +2 AC applies only against the struck target. Choose a dangerous attacker rather than a weak creature unlikely to answer.
Preserve a Straight Lane
All 20 feet must be toward the target in a straight line. Corners, circling movement, and teleportation do not satisfy the charge.
Whenever the choice becomes uncertain, return to position, timing, and target choice. A good gimmick still needs a good target.
Reach, Mounts, and Tight Rooms
Lance Considerations
The lance has reach and follows its normal special rules. The magic does not remove disadvantage against targets within 5 feet.
A rider may use it one-handed while mounted, but a creature on foot needs two hands. Fancy Footwork does not protect the mount unless an attack is actually made against the wielder.
If terrain prevents a 20-foot approach, fight with the +1 lance normally or draw a sidearm. Do not spend several turns manufacturing one perfect charge while the party is already in danger.
Advice for the Game Master
How to Run It at the Table
Place the lance in a ruined jousting arena, a fey dance hall, or the trophy room of a knight who insists the flamingo is a heraldic crane.
Keep the forced spin brief and physical: one magical pivot, a spray of pink sparks, and the target ending exactly where it began.
Speed 0 does not erase movement already spent. Forced movement and teleportation still function because they do not use the target’s speed.
Set expectations for comic weapons during Session 0. The humour should create shared momentum without turning another player's serious moment into a compulsory punchline.

Common Mistakes
Five Ways to Fumble the Dance
Turning around during the charge. The approach must be a straight 20-foot line toward the target.
Removing the target’s action. Only its speed becomes 0.
Applying +2 AC against everyone. Fancy Footwork protects against the triggering target only.
Ignoring the lance’s close-range weakness. Its normal special rules still apply.
Triggering several times. Chaotic Pirouette works once per turn.
The Tavernkeeper's Verdict
A Proper Weapon Wearing a Ridiculous Bird
This lance rewards players who plan movement lanes and use brief control to protect the party. The target’s involuntary dance is funny, but the real achievement is choosing where the fight stops.
Charge straight, finish on balance, and never apologize for the flamingo.
