Raising the Stakes With Environmental Hazards

Adding traps, collapsing floors and unpredictable weather doesn’t speed up combat, but it does raise the stakes. I’ve used everything from caves that cave in to storms that shift visibility. These hazards force players to think beyond hit points—where they stand matters as much as what they hit.

Environmental hazards should change the dynamic of a fight without replacing the need for good pacing.
