Yer Desire for Drama Ain’t Worth the Table’s Sanity
Mike’s Opening Rant: Not Every Session Needs a Breakdown or a Betrayal
Had a rogue once — good with daggers, terrible with self-control. Every time the group found a moment of peace? He’d steal from a party member. Whisper to an NPC. Light a fire somewhere. “My character needs chaos,” he says.
Aye? Well mine needs a nap, ya melodrama-chokin’ dice diva!!
Another lad played a cursed sorcerer. Wouldn’t go a session without tryin’ to sacrifice himself, cry blood, or run into the arms of an enemy to “make it interesting.” What he made was noise. Mess. Fatigue.
IF YER CHARACTER’S CONSTANTLY BURNIN’ THE BRIDGE JUST TO FEEL SOMETHIN’, YA DON’T NEED A GAME — YA NEED A JOURNAL!!

Drama Should Serve the Story — Not Sabotage It
Drama’s not the problem. Hell, some of the best moments I’ve seen came from heartbreak, betrayal, or tough choices.
But there’s a difference between story-earned conflict — and cheap theatrics.
If yer every move is:
Turning on the party
Lying for no reason
Dramatic self-harm
Screaming mid-scene
Ignorin’ plans so you can “go rogue”
…then what yer doin’ ain’t story. It’s disruption. And most of the time, it ain’t about the character. It’s about you.
The Table Deserves Stability — Not Just Spotlight
Let me ask ya this: what happens when yer constant twists and tantrums steal scenes from everyone else? When yer need to be “deep” means someone else never gets their moment?
What yer doin’ is wearin’ the table down. The players. The GM. Even yer own character stops bein’ interestin’ when they’re always in crisis.
Wanna see characters with weight who don’t shove it down everyone’s throat?
The Dagger That Hates the Sun — cursed, sure. But quiet. Effective.
The Tiefling Who Was Never Really There — trauma without tantrums.
The Goblin Cleric Who Hates Healing (But Does It Anyway) — complex and dependable, not explosive.
Stop Starvin’ the Table So You Can Eat
Ya don’t gotta throw a tantrum to get attention. Ya don’t gotta betray the party to have a “moment.” And if ya do?
Then maybe yer chasin’ catharsis instead of playin’.
We’re here to build a story. Not babysit yer endless arcs.
FAQ
Q: But my character would do that!
A: Great. Then let it happen once. Maybe twice. Not every damn session.
Q: Isn’t drama what makes things fun?
A: Sure — when it’s earned. When it serves the story. When it invites others in, not locks ‘em out.
Q: What if I like high-emotion scenes?
A: So do we. But if yer the only one cryin’, screamin’, or runnin’ into fire? Take a step back.
