By Bahlin’s Bent Fork, She Blocked a Fireball With a Keg Lid

You ever seen someone parry a displacer beast with a barstool? I have. And her name was Brenna Barrelgut.

Stout of frame and sharper than a brewer’s axe, Brenna was once a battlefield bruiser for a dwarven clan no one remembers — because they got wiped out in a border war. She survived by sheer stubbornness, then wandered the surface world until she found this tavern. Said the smell of singed meat, ale foam, and regret reminded her of home.

She never left.

Now she guards the tavern with a glare and a shield carved from an old keg that saved her life once. Swore an oath on it — “So long as the ale flows, no blood shall spill past this door.” She don’t talk much. Don’t smile much either. But when chaos comes a-knockin’? She answers.

She's the kind o’ woman who punches first, then checks yer ID.

How to Use Brenna at Your Table

Brenna’s perfect for anchoring a tavern, guarding a rebel safehouse, or helping the party in a tight pinch — but don’t mistake her for background noise. She’s got the reflexes of a pit fighter and the restraint of a nun made o’ granite.

Personality

  • Gruff but fair. Doesn't suffer fools or drunkards.

  • Will toss a bard through a window gently if they play Wonderwall.

  • Only speaks up when it matters — and when she does, listen.

Combat Style

  • Shield-based fighter, favors non-lethal takedowns.

  • Uses improvised weapons — stool legs, mop handles, tankards filled with rock salt.

  • Never draws blood unless it’s to stop more being spilled.

Dialogue Hooks

  • “I ain’t your mum, but I will spank the dumb outta ya.”

  • “The ale’s cold. The floor’s colder. Start a fight and you’ll meet both.”

  • “You wanna quest? Good. Start by not dyin’ in the alley.”

Recommended Pairings

And if you need a PC to bounce off her quiet fury? Try The Barbarian Who Refuses to Rage — they’ll understand each other without sayin’ a word.

She doesn’t guard the tavern because she trusts ya. She does it because someone has to.

👉 Got need of a no-nonsense anchor for yer home base? Swing by Mike’s Tavern or send word — we’ll hand ya the whole barrel o’ characters.

⚠️ Just don’t try to flirt. She’s got a keg to polish and zero time for goblin-lovin’, torch-snuffin’, lute-humpin’ adventurers.

FAQ

Q: Can Brenna be a companion or hireling?
A: Aye, but she won’t follow you. You earn her respect, she shows up when yer in real trouble. Not a sword-for-hire — a shield-for-need.

Q: Is she killable?
A: In theory, sure. In practice? You’d better pray she don’t get back up.
