The High Ground Isn’t Just for Archers — How Position Wins Fights
Mike’s Personal Experience
We dwarves know a thing or two about mountains. On a journey through the Ravennest Wilds, my party and I were ambushed by bandits. Instead of charging, we scrambled up a rocky outcrop and forced the brigands to climb. They never reached the top. A higher position turned our bows and spells into turrets and their melee weapons into dead weight.
Here’s why high ground and smart positioning change everything.
1. Line of Sight and Range
Being above an enemy gives you unobstructed shots. Ranged fighters can pick off targets while staying out of melee reach.
2. Better Defenses
Climbing slows enemies, and you gain cover or improved AC depending on the ruleset. In PF2e, high ground can add a circumstance bonus to your attacks.
3. Spell AoE Optimization
Area spells like Fireball or Lightning Bolt are easier to aim when you see the whole battlefield. No more friendly fire!
4. Control the Choke Points
High ground often comes with narrow access points. Plant a fighter with a reach weapon at the top and watch enemies fall.
5. Moral Advantage
It demoralizes foes when they have to climb toward death. A shaken enemy is an easier target. Read When You Gave Them Everything and They Still Want More to see how to handle greedy opponents.

Final Thoughts
Position is power. Whether you’re on a hill, at the top of a staircase, or even standing on a table, being above your foes gives you control and advantage.
