Once, in a cramped dungeon hallway, our paladin refused to retreat despite being on his last legs. He wanted to “stand strong.” Naturally, he went down, our cleric burned his last spell slot to revive him, and we nearly wiped. Had he used Step or Disengage to fall back just one square, the ogre’s reach would have been wasted and our rogue could have flanked. Remember: heroes who survive fights live to fight again.

Let’s talk about why retreating is sometimes the most lethal move.

1. Preserve Your Hit Points

Disengaging or stepping away prevents attacks of opportunity. A single spared hit can save you from death and save your healer a precious spell slot.

2. Reset the Battle Line

Falling back can force your foe to chase you, exposing them to your allies’ opportunity attacks. In PF2e, stepping five feet can break line of sight, causing ranged attackers to waste actions repositioning.

3. Create Crossfires and Flanks

4. Bring Them Into Traps

Sometimes stepping back lures enemies over traps or into zones of control like Spike Growth. That ogre will regret taking one step too many.

5. Save the Nova
